RPA is NOT an animal welfare organisation. RPA works with people, providing a service that people enjoy and value. The pony provides motive power and a lot of pleasure because people like ponies. Luckily ponies like people, which makes our job easier.
In developing the RPA concept, I have worked ponies in urban communities in Newcastle, Carlisle, Penrith, Appleby, Birmingham, Brecon, Exeter and London. The ponies have met thousands of people, all of whom have been friendly and interested and overjoyed to meet a pony close up.
Obama and Henry, the ponies, have pulled wheelchair enabled vehicles on the Pennines, Brecon Beacons, Dartmoor, and beaches, public parks, moorland and roads. MS, Downs, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Friedrich’s Ataxia, Arthrogryposis Multipex Congenita and numerous other conditions have failed to stop people getting out cross country and enjoying themselves.
Organic Arts, based at West Town Farm, Ide, just outside Exeter, have led the production testing of the iBex, ensuring that all the children in a class get round the farm, and see everything during school farm visits. The vehicle, and our skills have improved dramatically since the first visit.
We are now ready to offer the service to a wider audience.
